About

The artist, Susan Carney, continues to evolve in terms of what inspires her choice of subject matter, the media and mediums she employs, and the art forms and or processes in which she engages. A longstanding intrigue with change has always informed Carney’s work.  Watercolor, spray paint, acrylic paint, varnish, and collage combine on wood, canvas, and paper … with a vocabulary of images such as birds, insects, knots, weaving, and fragments of the human body.

Susan has recently taken up residency in Southern Maryland, where the deeply rich, largely unknown indigenous history of the area has sparked an almost obsessive fascination with creating works encompassing nature (in all its geographical and animal splendor), as well as adding elements of the peoples that have populated and influenced the landscape.

A graduate of West Virginia’s Shepherd University, with a BFA in Painting and Printmaking, Carney completed an MFA at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia.
